Aromatherapy/Botanicals Tip of the Week

Source
Most of us at one point or another have endured those pesky (and embarrassing!) flakes known as dandruff. Every year, I notice that my scalp tends to become drier during the winter months, most likely because of the dry environment that's created from keeping the heat on all the time.

Rather than turning to chemical-laden dandruff shampoos, I set out to find a natural remedy and the first thing I came across was tea tree oil. Dandruff is typically caused by a fungus on the scalp and tea tree oil possesses strong anti-fungal and antiseptic properties, making it a great remedy for a flaky scalp. There are plenty of dandruff shampoos on the market that include tea tree oil, but if going this route, be sure to look for a natural variety such as Nature's Gate. My boyfriend and I have been using Nature's Gate Tea Tree Calming Shampoo for about a week now and haven't noticed any more dryness!

You can also make your own tea tree shampoo by simply adding 10 drops of tea tree oil to 8 ounces of your favorite shampoo (again, preferably a variety that uses natural ingredients).

Another remedy that I came across are soybeans. Soybeans are high in B vitamins (such as biotin) and zinc, so they're great for helping improve the health of your hair and skin, which in turn helps remedy dandruff! According to The Green Pharmacy by James A. Duke PhD, eating just one handful of soybeans each day should be enough to help keep your scalp healthy and flake-free. Plus, they're really tasty!

Note: If you want to use tea tree oil without putting it in your shampoo, be sure to dilute it with a base oil (such as jojoba oil or sweet almond oil) before applying to your scalp.

2011 Spring and Summer Fragrances On Their Way Out!

Being that it's now January 2012, I think it's about time to retire my seasonal spring and summer scents from 2011. If you want to get them, they'll be available until next Friday (1/20)!

Also, don't forget that these fragrances are on sale for just $3.50--a real bargain! Get 'em before they're gone! ;)

This blend of various floral scents reminds me of the many wildflowers I pick each spring and summer on my nature walks. It truly does smell like the real thing!

Sweet Pea is such a light and fun fragrance with a perfect balance of sweetness and floral tones.

This is what it smells like after an invigorating rain shower in the warmth of the spring and summer months. Every time I smell Spring Rain, I think of fresh dew on blades of grass after a summer rain.

Aromatherapy/Botanicals Tip of the Week

Jasmine is known by most as a romantically fragrant flower, but it also has many uses in aromatherapy.  For example, jasmine essential oil can be helpful in relieving hormonal problems such as dysmenorrhoea and is said to help reduce pain during childbirth. Jasmine is also an effective remedy for battling depression and anxiety because the scent has a sedative-like effect and enhances mental functioning.

If you're like me, you sometimes succumb to the winter blues (especially after long months of cold, cold, and more cold here in the Catskills!) and need a little pick-me-up. This milk bath recipe from Aura Cacia's website seems like the perfect remedy!

Soothing Milk Bath
(from Aura Cacia essential oils, www.auracacia.com)
Add 3 drops of jasmine, 6 drops of lavender, 2 drops of clary sage and a single drop of bergamot oil to 3 ounces of whole milk. Add this to warm bath water and let the gentle aroma of jasmine work its magic on the senses.

A Few Quick Winter Decor Projects

It feels like it's been forever since I've last posted and I apologize! Like many of you, the holidays kind of swept me up in a whirlwind of craziness and at last I'm returning to my normal schedule. I've finally been able to finish a few winter decorations I've been meaning to put up and figured I'd share them with you! Before I begin, I'd like to also say that I do acknowledge how lame it is that I'm only now getting to these winter projects after Christmas and New Years ;)

You may recall that I did a little picture project for Halloween a few months ago. Well, those Halloween-themed pictures have been hanging in my living room up until about an hour ago. Now, I finally have winter themed pictures to match the season!

This next bit doesn't really qualify as a project, but I don't care...I'm just glad I got it done. My mom bought me this awesome wintery garland, which I used to dress up my photo display in our living room. I am completely in love with this garland, it's just as pretty as the real thing!

Yes, that's me and my baby sister...two little hippie babies!

Well, that's all for today! I do have a bit of exciting news coming up, though! I'm trying out a new container for my candles, which also means new labels and a whole new look! I'm really excited about this and can't wait to show you guys!
